DBT Skills Group
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a world renowned treatment developed by Professor Marsha Linehan. This therapy has been the subject of extensive research and has proven so successful that it has been incorporated into the public health services nationally and internationally.
The DBT skills group is helpful for anyone looking to create change in their life and enhance well-being. DBT takes a mindful approach and contains aspects of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
Changing patterns of behaviour can be difficult. The skills taught in the group offer a well renowned method to change unwanted patterns of behaviours and unhelpful reactions. People react differently in situations depending on their present circumstances, personality etc. Some people are prone to react in a more emotionally intense manner than others.
DBT theory suggests that some people’s emotional arousal levels can increase more quickly than others, attain a higher level of emotional stimulation, and take a longer time to return to baseline.
The DBT skills group is concerned with learning skills, it is not a group in which there is in dept sharing of ones difficulties but focuses on providing you with the skills to manage emotions and situations more effectively. Being more effective in regulating emotions, tolerating distress and managing relationships can lead to improved quality of life.
DBT Skills Group
DBT skills group involves a combination of skills that include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness skills.
– Mindfulness : A core DBT skill. Learn to cultivate awareness and notice the judgments that cloud and distort thinking.
– Emotion Regulation: Learn to recognise and experience emotions without feeling overwhelmed by them.
– Distress Tolerance: Learn to bear pain skillfully. Pain and distress are inevitable in life, they cannot be entirely avoided. An inability to accept distress leads to further suffering.
– Interpersonal Effectiveness : Learn skills that enhance your interactions with others and help you to get what you need in an assertive manner, building confidence.
Each module is 4 weeks long. It is recommended that each module be completed for the most benefit, however it is possible to complete individual modules once the mindfulness module has been completed.
