Cyber bullying is tormenting, harassing or embarrassing individuals or groups through a technological medium such as the internet or mobile phones. The increase of social media sites has meant that cyber bullying rates have increased dramatically. Reports have found that incidences of cyber bullying among teenagers in Ireland are among the highest in Europe.
The psychological and emotional outcomes of cyber bullying are similar to those of real-life bullying. The difference is real-life bullying often ends when school or work ends. For cyber bullying, there is no escape.
DIFFERENT FORMS OF CYBER BULLYING INCLUDE:
- Posting or sending cruel gossip in an attempt to tarnish a persons reputation or relationships with others.
- Exclusion
- Pretending to be someone by hacking into their account and sending emails and messages
- Being offensive and rude
- Threatening
- Revealing secrets
Everyone who has access to a telephone and/or computer are at risk of cyber bullying. It can effect both children and adults. A person being bullied, in any context, can experience a range of similar emotions. However, there are some specific warning signs that someone is being bullied online:
- Appearing sad or moody when using technological devices such as phone or computer
- Appearing anxious at all times
- Withdrawn from online activities or hesitant to use their phone
- Obsessed with using their phone or computer but appearing nervous or irritable when doing so
Someone who is being bullied online may also be experiencing bullying in school or work. Please speak with the person if you have any concerns.
