Self-esteem is your overall opinion of yourself — how you honestly feel about your abilities and limitations. Possessing little self-regard can lead people to become depressed to fall short of their potential, or to tolerate abusive situations and relationships.

Signs you may have low self esteem include:

  • Sensitivity to criticism
  • Accentuating the negative
  • Self neglect
  • Exaggerated concern over what you imagine other people think
  • Feeling like a failure. Failure effects a person with low self esteem much more than a person with high self esteem. A person with high self esteem will not measure their worth based on past failures but the strenght of their character. They will look at a mistake or failure as valuable life experience and learn from it.
  • Hostility
  • Social withdrawal
  • Excessive preoccupation with personal problems
  • Self shame
  • Lack of trust
  • Idolizing people

Low self esteem can effect your ability to achieve. If a promotion is up for grabs in work, you may not apply for it as negative thoughts may pursuade you that you are not worthy enough even if you are.

Low self esteem can have a negative impact in many areas of ones life.
